Mumbai, July 23 -- The Centre has inaugurated the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway and a series of National Highway projects in Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant milestone in the state's transport infrastructure. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath jointly dedicated the projects at an event in Unnao. The projects aim to improve regional connectivity, ease congestion and support economic growth in central Uttar Pradesh.
The newly opened Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is a 63-km, six-lane access-controlled corridor developed at an estimated cost of around Rs 47 bn. Running parallel to the existing highway between the two cities, the expressway has been designed to provide a faster and safer alternative for commuters and freight while allowing for future widening. Infrastructure features incorporate provisions for traffic growth and enhanced safety measures.
Commissioning of the corridor will reduce travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur from nearly three hours at peak to about 40-45 minutes, with corresponding gains in logistics efficiency for goods movement between the state capital, industrial centres and adjoining districts. Faster passenger transit is expected to improve daily commuting patterns and encourage regional integration. The expressway forms part of efforts to strengthen linkages between urban agglomerations.
At the same ceremony leaders inaugurated or laid foundation stones for additional National Highway projects worth more than Rs 48.5 bn, including widening, bypasses and connectivity upgrades to improve access to urban and industrial centres. The corridor will link with strategic projects such as the Ganga Expressway and the Kanpur Ring Road to create an integrated expressway network across the state. Officials anticipate the combined projects will alleviate pressure on existing highways and enhance long term mobility.
Improved road infrastructure is expected to support investment, manufacturing, tourism and employment generation while benefiting nearby districts through better access to markets, education and healthcare. The inauguration underscores the Centre's focus on national connectivity programmes and positions Uttar Pradesh as a major recipient of expressway and National Highway investments. The projects are intended to support regional economic growth and more efficient passenger and freight movement.
