Mumbai, Nov. 2 -- Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow has inaugurated an 804-metre section of its parallel taxi track, with the facility expected to reduce aircraft movement time on the ground by up to four minutes and improve flight operations. The section forms part of a 2,864-metre track being developed in phases.

The newly opened section will become operational from Thursday midnight, while the remaining stretch is scheduled for inauguration by the end of March 2027. The airport said the project was being undertaken to improve airline on-time performance and strengthen ground traffic management in coordination with the Airports Authority of India.

An airport official said aircraft operating on Runway 27 could save one to two minutes of taxiing time, while those using Runway 09 could save three to four minutes. The track is also expected to reduce runway occupancy time, support faster take-off clearances from air traffic control and enable arriving aircraft to reach parking stands more quickly.

The airport handles scheduled commercial flights, general aviation and non-scheduled operations. It also serves as a diversion airport for flights bound for Delhi, Varanasi and other cities, particularly when weather-related disruptions affect operations at those locations.

Under the winter schedule, the airport is set to handle 134 air traffic movements (ATMs) daily, connecting 20 domestic and 10 international destinations. It is currently handling about 126-130 ATMs a day amid prevailing geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, with daily passenger traffic ranging from 15,000 to 20,000, the official said. The airport said the parallel taxi track would support smoother aircraft movement, improve operational efficiency and help accommodate future growth in air traffic.
