Mumbai, July 6 -- On 29 June 2026 the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) of Longleng District under the Phom Peoples' Council (PPC) issued a one week ultimatum to authorities over the prolonged neglect of the Changtongya-Longleng two-lane road. The CSOs warned they would take compelling action if the road was not restored and maintained within the stipulated period. The statement was issued by the Media Cell of the Phom Students' Conference after a consultative meeting convened to review district welfare and development.
Participants highlighted immense hardship faced by commuters due to the deteriorating road condition and said transportation, economic activity and overall development of the district had been severely affected. The CSOs recalled that several representations and meetings had been submitted and held with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, the district administration and the executing company without any concrete action. They therefore demanded an inspection report detailing present road condition, reasons for delay and a proposed course of action.
The CSOs directed authorities to submit the detailed inspection report to their office within one week and specified that the report must explain the status of construction work and the proposed measures for completion and maintenance. They cautioned that failure to submit the report and initiate corrective measures within the stipulated period would make the authorities solely responsible for any subsequent action the CSOs might pursue. The meeting was led by the PPC president YB Angam Phom who expressed serious concern over prolonged non maintenance of the project.
The body resolved to pursue the matter with appropriate government departments and agencies until necessary action was taken in the larger interest of the people of Longleng District. The CSOs emphasised the urgent need for immediate and effective measures to restore the road to ensure public safety and convenience. Local residents and commuters continue to face disruption while the district's economic prospects remain constrained by the damaged transport link.
