Mumbai, Nov. 2 -- Larsen & Toubro's AI cloud and hyperscale data centre business, Vyoma.AI, has begun construction of a 52 MW AI-ready green data centre in Chennai. The project is intended to expand computing capacity for artificial intelligence applications and support the growing requirements of digital infrastructure users in India.
The facility is being designed for high-density AI workloads generated by hyperscalers, neocloud providers and AI companies. It will form part of L&T's planned gigawatt-scale AI Factory campus in Chennai, which already has an operational 30 MW facility equipped with advanced AI compute clusters.
The campus has 150 MVA of power infrastructure readiness, according to Vyoma.AI. The new data centre will use direct-to-chip liquid cooling to manage heat produced by high-density computing systems, alongside renewable energy and other energy-efficient technologies intended to support its sustainability objectives.
The development comes as the expansion of AI applications, cloud adoption and data localisation requirements increases demand for computing capacity and related infrastructure. AI workloads are placing additional pressure on power availability, cooling efficiency and the scalability of data centre facilities, with liquid cooling being adopted for increasingly dense computing environments.
Vyoma.AI is targeting more than 250 MW of data centre capacity across India as part of its national expansion strategy. The Chennai project adds to its existing infrastructure portfolio and is intended to support compute-intensive applications, AI models and cloud-based services as businesses deploy these technologies at scale.
The company did not disclose the investment planned for the 52 MW facility or its expected completion date. The project's construction marks an expansion of L&T's presence in specialised AI infrastructure, while the use of renewable energy and advanced cooling is expected to address the environmental and operational demands associated with high-performance computing.
