Mumbai, July 16 -- Kolkata Metro is set to boost passenger capacity with 14 new-generation rakes planned for the financial year 2027 (FY27), and it has also begun replacement of an escalator at Netaji Bhavan station on the Blue Line. The replacement concerns escalator NJ 3260 which links the mezzanine level to the surface gate at Jadubabu Bazar. The developments were communicated in an official statement. The Blue Line serves central corridors and the upgrades form part of scheduled capacity planning.

Kolkata Metro said the escalator service would be suspended from nine July 2026 until a new escalator is commissioned, and the stairs alongside the unit would remain open for commuter use. The authority estimated the replacement work would take approximately six weeks to complete. The temporary suspension will affect access at the Jadubabu Bazar exit but other station facilities will remain operational. Commuters have been advised to allow extra time for entry and exit during the period of works.

The allocation of 14 new-generation rakes in FY27 is intended to increase service capacity and improve peak hour circulation on the network. Officials indicated the additional rakes would enable higher frequency and help address crowding without specifying the delivery schedule in detail. The rakes are described as modernised stock intended to support growing ridership. Transport planners indicated the rakes will be compatible with existing track and depot facilities and will follow established maintenance routines.

Operational adjustments including the escalator replacement form part of broader efforts to enhance the passenger experience while expanding rolling stock. Kolkata Metro reiterated that station access will be maintained via stairs and that updates will be issued when the new escalator is commissioned. Officials said the new rolling stock will improve comfort and boarding efficiency once deployed. The notice was issued on nine July 2026.
