Mumbai, July 13 -- Interest in engineering has strengthened as India pursues infrastructure-led growth and large-scale projects create clearer career pathways in civil engineering. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is playing a central role in linking engineering education with professional opportunities, and the agency has positioned National Highway development as a viable option for graduates from premier institutions. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is used for structured recruitment, and NHAI hires 100 engineering professionals each year for technical roles such as Deputy Manager.
To deepen engagement with students, NHAI launched a formal internship programme in December 2025 that began with a one month winter internship for civil engineering students and later added a six month term internship. The stipend of Rs 20,000 per month has contributed to the attractiveness of the placements and has been presented as one of the more competitive experiential learning options for aspiring engineers. Building on that model, the Summer Internship Programme 2026 saw significant expansion and operational reach across the authority.
The summer intake comprised 423 student interns deployed across 125 NHAI field offices and 51 functional verticals at NHAI headquarters, and the exercise attracted strong participation from leading technical institutes. Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) supplied 59 students while National Institutes of Technology (NITs) accounted for 282, reflecting heightened confidence among young engineers in careers linked to national highway infrastructure. The scale and diversity of placements have provided practical exposure across planning, design and supervision assignments.
Complementary reforms aim to strengthen the professional ecosystem for civil engineers by introducing fixed cost detailed project reports to secure fair remuneration for consultancy services and by revising compensation frameworks to attract high calibre DPR and supervision consultants. By combining merit based recruitment, structured internships and contractual reforms, NHAI seeks to expand the pipeline of skilled engineers and to encourage sustained participation of graduates in nation building through highway development.
