Mumbai, July 28 -- India and Panama agreed on 23 July 2026 to strengthen maritime cooperation, identifying logistics, shipping, maritime security, skill development and digitalisation as the key pillars of an expanded strategic partnership. The understanding emerged from bilateral talks between the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and Panama's Minister of Foreign Affairs Javier Eduardo Martinez-Acha Vasquez. The meeting was framed by officials as a step to align priorities and deepen institutional engagement between the two countries.
Sonowal said that India and Panama are natural maritime partners, and officials indicated both sides aimed to combine Panama's strategic logistics strengths with India's expanding port and shipping capabilities to build resilient supply chains and strengthen global connectivity. The ministers discussed opportunities for trade, investment and innovation, with sustainable growth and security featuring as shared objectives. Officials highlighted the potential for technical cooperation and exchange of best practice in areas such as port management and regulatory coordination.
Both delegations identified skill development and digitalisation as priorities for collaboration, with a view to improving seafarer training, maritime safety and operational efficiency. They also agreed to explore partnerships in logistics technology, data sharing and modal connectivity to reduce bottlenecks and enhance cargo movement. Officials signalled interest in capacity building and training programmes for maritime personnel, and in piloting digital solutions to streamline customs procedures and port operations.
Observers said that a strengthened India-Panama maritime relationship could open new avenues for bilateral commerce and investment while reinforcing regional supply chain resilience. Officials indicated that follow up could include expert working groups, information exchange and targeted technical assistance to implement agreed initiatives. The ministers committed to maintain regular dialogue to translate the agreed priorities into concrete cooperation and to monitor progress through continued engagement at political and technical levels.
