Mumbai, July 16 -- GMR Airports Ltd has unveiled a multi-phase modernisation and expansion roadmap for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur after taking over operations. The company said the first phase will begin with an initial investment of about Rs 3 billion (Rs 3 bn), to be deployed on immediate upgrades and preparatory works.
The first phase of development, to be implemented over the next eight years, is intended to enhance passenger experience, expand operational capacity and to position Nagpur as a leading aviation and logistics gateway for Vidarbha and the wider region. The programme will focus on operational excellence, advanced technology, sustainability and world-class passenger amenities while upgrading existing infrastructure.
The phased expansion aims to raise passenger handling capacity from the current three million (three mn) per annum to 30 million (30 mn) annually during the 30-year concession period. Company plans envisage the possibility of further expansion to 50 million passengers annually within the allotted land parcel, subject to demand and regulatory approvals, enabling large scale growth in domestic and international connectivity.
The airport is being planned as a major cargo and logistics hub with a long-term cargo handling capacity of 150,000 tonne (150,000 t) per annum and associated warehousing and logistics facilities. The scheme is designed to create a seamless, efficient and convenient travel experience through modern terminals, streamlined operations and sustainability measures aligned with global standards.
The company described the transformation as reflecting its long-term vision to create world-class aviation ecosystems that strengthen connectivity and contribute to national growth. The chief executive of the Nagpur airport characterised the expansion as more than an infrastructure upgrade and as a comprehensive transformation of the airport experience for passengers and freight operators.
