Mumbai, July 13 -- GMR Airports Limited unveiled a multi phase modernisation and expansion roadmap for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur, following completion of the airport privatisation and the handover of approximately 1,000 hectares on 25 June 2026. The declaration of the commercial operations date allowed GNIAL to commence operations and initiate long term development plans aimed at strengthening the company's airport portfolio and regional connectivity.
The first phase over the next eight years will focus on operational capacity and passenger experience, with immediate upgrades planned at the existing terminal. The programme will require an initial investment of about Rs three bn and will prioritise operational excellence, advanced technology, sustainability measures and enhanced passenger amenities to create a future ready airport ecosystem aligned with global standards.
The phased expansion envisages an increase in passenger handling capacity from the current three million (mn) passengers per annum to 30 mn passengers annually during the 30 year concession period, with potential to further enhance capacity to 50 mn within the allotted land parcel. The plan positions Nagpur as a major aviation and logistics gateway for Vidarbha and the wider region.
Leveraging Nagpur's strategic location at the geographical centre of India and the MIHAN ecosystem, the airport development also targets cargo growth with a long term handling capacity of 150,000 metric tonnes (t) per annum. Nearly 100 hectares of the handed over land have been earmarked for city side development or Aerocity to stimulate commercial activity, employment and regional economic growth.
The transformation will incorporate green energy, rainwater harvesting, environmentally responsible infrastructure and extensive landscaping to reduce environmental impact. The company indicated the roadmap is expected to create new opportunities for investment and employment and is expected to boost trade, tourism and regional connectivity, reinforcing Nagpur's strategic role in national networks and the company's long term airport development strategy.
