Mumbai, Oct. 6 -- The Ghaziabad-New Moradabad railway corridor in Uttar Pradesh is set for capacity expansion, with Northern Railway inviting bids for construction of third and fourth lines. The project is intended to strengthen the existing route and support the movement of passenger and freight trains.
The Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract is valued at Rs. 37.26 bn. The tender process opened on September 28, 2026, and bidders can submit proposals until February 23, 2027. The work falls under the Delhi and Moradabad divisions of Northern Railway.
The package covers construction of the additional tracks alongside the existing broad-gauge electrified double-line section, including the required detour portions. It also includes civil engineering, track laying, signalling and telecommunication, overhead electrification, electrical general services and other allied works needed to make the expanded section operational.
The Ghaziabad-New Moradabad section forms part of the wider Ghaziabad-Sitapur third and fourth line project, which received Union Cabinet approval in April 2026. The larger project covers 403 km at an estimated cost of Rs. 149.26 bn and passes through Ghaziabad, Hapur, Amroha, Moradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri and Sitapur districts.
The existing Ghaziabad-Sitapur section is part of the Delhi-Guwahati High Density Network, where capacity utilisation has reached as high as 168 per cent, according to the government. The additional infrastructure will give the Railways greater flexibility to manage train operations as traffic rises and is projected to accommodate about 35.72 mn t of additional freight each year, including coal, foodgrains, fertilisers and finished steel. Once completed and commissioned, the new lines will provide more room for passenger and freight services on the corridor.
