
Mumbai, July 20 -- Bengaluru Metro operator has unveiled a Rs 12.74 billion (bn) safety programme to install platform screen doors at all stations across the network. The initiative is intended to strengthen passenger protection and modernise station infrastructure. The authority framed the measure as a central element of its ongoing safety and service upgrade agenda. The plan also aligns with broader urban mobility priorities for safer public transport.
The platform screen doors will create a physical barrier between platforms and tracks, reducing incidents of accidental falls and unauthorised track access. Installation is designed to align with train door positions and signalling systems to ensure safe boarding and alighting. The specification emphasises robust materials and redundancy for reliability.
Beyond safety, the doors are expected to improve climate control within stations and cut energy use by reducing draft from tunnels. The project will also aim to decrease service disruptions caused by track intrusions and foreign objects on the right of way. The design will follow internationally recognised norms for platform edge protection. A structured maintenance regime will accompany the installation to sustain long term performance.
The project budget draws on the metro operator's capital allocations and provision for system upgrades. Procurement and installation will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to commuter services and to enable testing at pilot locations before network-wide rollout. Vendors will be selected through competitive tendering in line with public procurement rules.
The operator will coordinate with train control and safety teams to integrate door operations with signalling and platform management systems. The move positions the metro to meet higher safety standards and to provide a more predictable and secure travel environment for daily commuters. Implementation timetables and detailed technical schedules will be published by the authority as work progresses.
