Mumbai, July 16 -- Assam government (the government) will conduct a feasibility study to explore a metro rail along the Guwahati Ring Road, aiming to assess technical, financial and environmental viability, and to establish data requirements for planning. The study has been commissioned by the state transport department and will examine potential alignments, station locations, intermodal integration and operational considerations with existing urban transport networks. The initiative seeks to create a strategic framework for future rapid transit investment and to prioritise corridors on the basis of demand and deliverability.
The study will analyse ridership patterns, travel demand and interchange requirements with bus services and paratransit modes to ensure seamless connectivity for daily commuters. It will include assessments of land acquisition needs, geotechnical conditions, engineering constraints and environmental safeguards so that route options can be compared on a common basis. Detailed cost estimates, procurement options and preliminary financial modelling will be prepared to inform funding discussions with state and central stakeholders.
Planners will consider how a metro corridor along the ring road is aimed at relieving congestion, shortening journey times and supporting transit oriented development near key nodes across the metropolitan area. The assessment will evaluate potential benefits for economic activity, local employment and sustainable mobility, taking account of urban growth projections and travel pattern shifts. Proposals will be measured against criteria for social inclusion, accessibility and environmental impact reduction, including air quality and noise considerations.
The government will invite technical consultants through a transparent procurement process to undertake the study and will coordinate with municipal bodies, statutory agencies and central ministries as required. Stakeholder consultations, household and traffic surveys and comprehensive data collection exercises will form part of the work programme to ensure local priorities are reflected. Results of the feasibility study will provide options and recommendations for decision makers to consider in planning next stages and to inform budget allocations and implementation planning.
