Mumbai, Aug. 24 -- The key equity indices ended with modest losses on Monday, snapping a two-session winning streak, in line with weak global cues. Nifty closed below the 24,250 mark. PSU bank, media and bank shares declined, while metal, realty and IT stocks advanced.

As per provisional closing data, the S&P BSE Sensex tanked 171.72 points or 0.22% to 77,369.11. The Nifty 50 index lost 32.95 points or 0.14% to 24,219.05. Over the last two trading sessions, the Sensex gained 0.82%, while the Nifty advanced 0.72%.

The broader market outperformed the frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index fell 0.01% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index shed 0.17%.
