Mumbai, Oct. 9 -- The domestic equity benchmarks traded with major gains in the mid-afternoon trade. The Nifty traded above the 22,550 mark. PSU shares advanced after declining in the past trading session.

At 14:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, tanked 1,001.50 points or 1.39% to 72,596.42. The Nifty 50 index lost 328.45 points or 1.48% to 22,560.25.

In the broader market, the BSE 150 MidCap Index jumped 1.31% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index rose 0.65%.

The market breadth was weak. On the BSE, 2,511 shares rose and 1,772 shares fell. A total of 230 shares were unchanged.

Buzzing Index:

The Nifty PSU Bank index rose 1.37% to 8,105.25. The index fell 1.15% in the past trading session.
