Mumbai, Oct. 23 -- The key equity benchmarks erased early gains and traded with significant losses in the morning trade. The Nifty traded below the 22,550 mark. Metal shares extended losses for the fourth consecutive trading session.

At 10:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex tanked 306.81 points or 0.45% to 72,942.58. The Nifty 50 index rose 170.50 points or 0.75% to 22,515.15.

In the broader market, the BSE 150 MidCap Index declined 2.27% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index fell 2.96%.

Sellers outnumbered buyers. On the BSE, 652 shares rose and 3,220 shares fell. A total of 218 shares were unchanged.
