Mumbai, Oct. 8 -- Japan's current account surplus rose to JPY 4.06 trillion in August 2026 from JPY 3.63 trillion a year earlier, supported by a stronger primary income surplus and narrower services and secondary income deficits. However, the goods account swung to a JPY 687.7 billion deficit as imports grew 26.7%, outpacing a 16.9% rise in exports, with higher crude oil purchases contributing to the increase. Strong demand for AI-related electronics continued to support exports, while Japan's first-half trade surplus widened to JPY 17.43 trillion from JPY 14.23 trillion a year earlier.
