Kenya among 18 nations most hit by fertiliser chaos
Nairobi, July 15 -- Kenya is among 18 economies most exposed to nitrogenous fertiliser supply disruptions in the Gulf due to the US-Israel conflict with Iran, an assessment by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) shows, signalling a tough test for President William Ruto's policy of keeping the key farm input affordable for farmers.
This raises the prospect of a higher subsidy bill for the National Treasury and renewed pressure on food prices in Kenya.
The WTO points out that disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest maritime corridors, is constraining fertiliser supplies, increasing costs for Kenya and other countries dependent on imported stocks of the commodity.
