Srinagar, Sept. 21 -- Shamas Faquir occupies an exalted position in the illustrious tradition of Kashmiri Sufi saints and poets. A mystic of profound spiritual insight, a poet of remarkable simplicity and a devoted follower of the Qadiriyya Sufi order, he enriched Kashmiri literature with verses that embodied the essence of Sufism, spiritual discipline, universal brotherhood and the indigenous ethos of Kashmir. His real name was Muhammad Sidiq Bhat and he was born in the spring of 1839.
