Srinagar, June 26 -- The Emergency imposed in 1975 remains one of the most debated and defining moments in India's constitutional history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent remarks, calling it a "direct assault" on the Constitution, have once again brought renewed attention to a period widely described as one of the darkest phases of Indian democracy.
