India, July 9 -- Over the past decade, there have been tremendous improvements in maternal and child healthcare, which has helped in reducing under-five mortality and continue to be a public health priority for India. The country has observed remarkable progress in lowering child deaths with the help of immunisation, institutional deliveries and strengthened newborn care programmes. Yet, the preventable causes like birth asphyxia, neonatal sepsis, pneumonia, prematurity, and congenital disorders still account for the death of thousands of children annually, mainly in resource-constrained settings.
