Dhaka, April 9 -- A simple walk home from a madrasa has become a fight for survival for 13-year-old Imran Hossain.

The Hafez division student of Hazrat Sumaiya Madrasa in Fatullah, Narayanganj, had no part in the escalating feud over the jute trade -- but he was thrust into crossfire.

Thursday morning, near Chandni Housing in Harihar Para, the boy tried to avoid the chaos when rival factions of the local Jubo Dal erupted into a violent clash.

Bullets flew. Explosions rang out. Terrified residents scattered, shops shuttered, and Imran ran into a narrow alley for cover.

A single shot pierced his left abdomen, and he collapsed in a pool of blood. Two others were also wounded in the melee.
