Powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake strikes off Mindanao in southern Philippines
Dhaka, June 8 -- A 7.8-magnitude earthquake has struck off the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines, causing buildings to collapse and triggering tsunami warnings across the region, The New York Times reports.
The quake struck around 7:37am local time on Monday, about 15 miles southwest of Burias, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The American daily said buildings collapsed in some areas after the quake, while social media footage showed part of a shopping plaza crumbling in General Santos City.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The USGS warned there was a reasonable possibility of fatalities and damage because of the strength of the earthquake and local building conditions.
