Dhaka, March 16 -- The government has appointed Prof Mamun Ahmed as the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and named new vice-chancellors for Dhaka University, Jagannath University, and Bangladesh Open University.

Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon announced the appointments during a media briefing at the Ministry of Education on Monday.

Prof ABM Obaidul Islam, who has been leading the BOU, has been appointed as the new VC of DU. He teaches physics at DU.

Obaidul held the positions of general secretary of the Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) and convenor of the White Panel, the pro-BNP teachers' alliance at the university.
