Dhaka, June 16 -- The process to extradite former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed from Dubai is under way, Prime Minister's Information Advisor Zahed Ur Rahman has said.

At the Secretariat on Tuesday, Zahed said Dubai Police arrested Benazir with assistance from Interpol over cases involving corruption, passport forgery and other allegations.

"The extradition process to bring him back to Bangladesh to face trial is ongoing. This is one of the most significant achievements in the recent history of the Bangladesh Police, he added.

The capture of the once-powerful police chief, who headed both the Bangladesh Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) during the Awami League regime, first came to light on Sunday.
