Bangladesh, Aug. 18 -- Shafiqul Islam Apu, a former lawmaker from Jhenaidah-2 and the district Awami League president, has been arrested by Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch.

Police said he was detained on Sunday in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area, though it was not immediately clear in which case the arrest was made.

Shafiqul's detention comes more than a year after Sheikh Hasina fled to India on Aug 5 last year amid a student-led mass uprising.

After the interim government took charge, a series of arrests have been made targeting senior Awami League leaders, ministers, and influential MPs.
