Dhaka, Dec. 14 -- The Election Commission has directed police to remain on high alert ahead of the parliamentary polls, stressing strict measures to prevent clandestine attacks.

The EC also asked police to take strict action against those trying to launch covert attacks to foil the general election and referendum on implementing the July Charter.

The orders were issued in an emergency meeting with law-enforcing agencies at EC's headquarters. The meeting was chaired by CEC AMM Nasir Uddin.

Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah briefed journalists after the meeting.

He said the election will be held right on time and police were given the order to take strict action to make that happen in a peaceful environment.
