Dhaka, June 26 -- The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained nine Bangladeshi nationals for allegedly attempting to cross into India illegally through the border in Sherpur's Sreebordi Upazila.

A BGB patrol from the Karnajhora Border Outpost detained them on Thursday afternoon.

They were later handed over to Sreebordi Police Station around 9pm, Sreebardi Police chief Md Nurul Alam said.

The detainees are Apon Jol Das, 30, Nayan Tara, 25, Bijoy Hari Jol Das, 46, Sulakkhi, 42, Bina Das, 31, and four children who were travelling with them.

Police, citing the BGB, said the group had agreed to pay Tk 40,000 to members of a local human trafficking network to facilitate their entry into India.
