Bangladesh, July 17 -- Banks across the country will remain closed on Aug 5 for "July Uprising Day", which is set to be observed as a national holiday.

Bangladesh Bank issued a circular on Thursday informing all managing directors and chief executives of banks about the closure.

The interim government has officially declared Aug 5 as "July Uprising Day", commemorating the fall of the Awami League government after a mass movement on this day in 2024.

The movement, which began in July 2024 with students demanding reform of the quota system in government jobs, ultimately led to the fall of the government as deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India.
