Dhaka, March 30 -- A union level Awami League leader has been shot in Kushtia's Mirpur.

He was shot near his own business in Sadarpur Bazar on Sunday evening, said Kushtia Assistant Police Commissioner (Mirpur Circle) Muhammad Mahmudul Haque Majumdar.

The injured Shafiqul Islam Azam, 40, hails from the Bil Amla area of Mirpur Upazila.

Shafiqul serves as the general secretary of Amla Union Awami League and is a tobacco trader.

Citing locals, police said that Shafiqul was sitting at his shop in Sadarpur Bazar when a group of men called him out and spoke to him. After a while, they shot him and fled the scene.

Later, locals rescued him in critical condition and admitted him to Kushtia General Hospital. There, the doctor on duty provided...
