Dhaka, Feb. 25 -- Md Ali Hossain Fakir has assumed office as Bangladesh's inspector general of police (IGP), a day after the government announced his appointment.

Police Headquarters said in a statement on Wednesday that Fakir formally took over from outgoing IGP Baharul Alam in the morning.

Fakir joined the Bangladesh Police on Nov 15, 1995 as an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) through the 15th BCS (Police) batch.

Over his career, he has served as superintendent of police in Netrokona, Feni and Magura. He also held key positions including commandant of the Rapid Response Force (RRF) in Sylhet and commander of the 3rd Armed Police Battalion (APBn) in Khulna, 5th APBn in Dhaka and 7th APBn in Sylhet.
