United Kingdom, Oct. 2 -- Snapchat will introduce fees for users who want to preserve their archived content.

Under the new plan - which affects the Memories feature, moving away from the free, unlimited model it has used since 2016 - users with more than 5 GB of saved photos and videos will need to upgrade to paid storage plans or risk losing access.

Snap says that most Snapchatters - those under the 5 GB threshold - "won't be affected."

A blog post announcing the change includes the line: "It's never easy to transition from receiving a service for free to paying for it, but we hope the value we provide with Memories is worth the cost."
