United Kingdom, May 11 -- Instagram has axed end-to-end encryption for direct messages - meaning private chats on the platform are no longer protected by the extra layer of security.

The feature, known as e2ee, had previously been available as an optional setting for Instagram users.

It prevented messages from being intercepted or read while being sent between users.

With the change, all Instagram chats will now use standard encryption, which can allow service or network providers to potentially access message content.
