United Kingdom, March 29 -- Sinitta has claimed she was asked to be George Michael's fake girlfriend, but said no because she was too afraid she'd fall in love with him.

The So Macho hitmaker was "obsessed" with the Careless Whisper singer - who came out as gay in 1998 after being arrested for lewd conduct in a Beverly Hills public toilet - in the 1980s and had mixed feelings when she was asked to feign a relationship with the Wham star, but ultimately realised it wouldn't be a good idea.

She told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: "I was obsessed with him. I fancied him like mad. It was around the time of the New Romantic music era.

"Everybody was camp, wearing frilly shirts and eyeliner, so I had no idea he was gay.
