United Kingdom, June 5 -- Rick Springfield became an American citizen so that his wife can make financial decisions when he dies.

The Australian-born singer got his US citizenship back in 2006, and joked to People that he did so because he "wanted to be on jury duty".

He added: "I heard it was so much fun and such a kick that I just, I said, 'I gotta do this!'"

Rick then opened up honestly about his motivation for becoming an official American, as he said: "Honestly, it was for reasons like if I die first, my wife will be able to make financial or decisions."

Rick has been married to wife Barbara Porter for 41 years.

The couple now live in California, and Rick said he loves being Stateside.

He added: "My friends are here, my family'...
