United Kingdom, Oct. 5 -- Sir Elton John regards sobriety as one of his "greatest achievements".

The 79-year-old musical legend has sold over 300 million records around the world, achieved EGOT status and was awarded a knighthood in 1998, but he regards giving up drugs and alcohol in 1990 as being just as important as his professional accomplishments.

He told Britain's HELLO! magazine: "I've been sober for 36 years and my life has never been better.

"I nearly lost everything through my addictions, and becoming sober has been one of my greatest achievements.

"I've been so lucky to have the life I've had and it keeps getting better."
