The pair had an "organic" chemistry playing Julie Richman and punk rocker Randy in the 1983 romcom Valley Girl, two unlikely opposites who fall head over heels for each other, while Deborah and Nicolas even had a bizarre secret signal for each other, which appears in the movie.

She recalled to People: "The chemistry, it was already there. And when you have that kind of chemistry, creativity is just on fire.

"I mean, you pull creativity from the field anyway. And so, when he would do something, and then it would inspire something in me, or I would do something, and it would inspire something in him."
