United Kingdom, Oct. 6 -- Ben Stiller felt "out of balance" when he separated from his wife.

The 59-year-old actor-and-director split from Christine Taylor - with whom he has Ella, 23, and 20-year-old Quinn - in 2017 but they reconciled during the COVID-19 pandemic and he has told how the death of his father, Jerry Stiller, in 2020 saw him go looking for answers.

Jerry's death prompted Ben to come up with an idea to make a documentary about the comedian and his mom Anne Meara in order to "understand" how they coped with maintaining their marriage amid "stress and tension" from working together.
