United Kingdom, Jan. 16 -- James Van Der Beek is planning to make new year's resolutions this spring, because he doesn't believe January should be the first month of the year.

The 48-year-old actor - who has stage 3 colorectal cancer - insists it "makes absolutely no sense" to celebrate a new year "in the dead of winter" when animals are hibernating, and he believes March should be the first month of the year instead.

He said in an Instagram video: "Anybody else out there finding that your New Year's resolution was impossible to keep?

"I'm gonna say something. I don't think it's your fault. I think it makes total sense. Why are we celebrating a New Year in the dead of winter?
