United Kingdom, Oct. 22 -- Remedy Entertainment's CEO Tero Virtala has stepped down.

The Max Payne and Alan Wake studio has announced Virtala - who headed up Remedy since 2016 - has left his position with immediate effect.

As a result, Remedy's Board of Directors has appointed studio co-founder Markus Maki as interim CEO.

In a statement, Maki said of Virtala: "I want to thank Tero Virtala for his substantial contribution to the management of Remedy since 2016.

"I personally thank Tero for good cooperation and wish him all the best for the future."

As Maki steps up to fill Virtala's position, Remedy confirmed Henri Osterlund will take over the new CEO's role as chairman of the board.
