Kenya, Aug. 19 -- After graduating from college, I believed that a bright future could be built solely through hard effort and perfection. I never thought that my greatest struggle would be with witchcraft rather than deadlines, superiors, or workplace politics. In Nairobi, I work for a reputable firm. For many years, I was one of the most devoted workers, consistently arriving early, exceeding deadlines, and even mentoring others. "Keep it up; promotion is coming" was what everyone kept saying to me. But nothing occurred year after year.

Rather, I was getting promoted over individuals I had taught, who had put in half as much work. I initially assumed it was simply terrible luck. But after that, odd things began to occur. Whenever I was summoned for an evaluation, an unpleasant incident would occur. Once, as soon as I walked into the manager's office, my voice vanished entirely.
