NHRC takes suo motu cognisance of Bengaluru quarry accident; issues notice to Karnataka government
New Delhi, July 6 -- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday took suo motu cognisance of a media report that at least seven migrant labourers died and five others were injured when a massive granite rock fell on them at a quarry in Bengaluru on July 2, as per the release.
Reportedly, the incident indicated negligence by the quarry owner. About 16 labourers were on the site when the incident occurred, the release said.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the news reports, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights. Therefore, it has issued notices to the Karnataka Chief Secretary, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
