Elena Rybakina dethrones Aryna Sabalenka to win maiden US Open title, rises to world No 1
New York, Sept. 13 -- Elena Rybakina ended Aryna Sabalenka's two-year reign at the US Open with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory in the women's singles final on Saturday (local time), securing her maiden title at Flushing Meadows and reclaiming the world No 1 ranking.
The second-seeded Rybakina produced a composed performance to overcome the top seed and two-time defending champion in Arthur Ashe Stadium, denying Sabalenka a third consecutive US Open crown, according to the US Open website.
Rybakina will move to the top of the WTA rankings when they are updated on Monday, replacing Sabalenka, who had occupied the No 1 position for 99 consecutive weeks.
