London, Jan. 6 -- Amnesty International on Monday raised serious concerns over Pakistan's Twenty-Seventh Constitutional Amendment, warning that it poses a "grave threat" to the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law in the country.
In a statement, Amnesty said the amendment undermines judicial autonomy by establishing a Federal Constitutional Court that lacks sufficient safeguards for independence. The organisation said the new court weakens judges' security of tenure and shields the president as well as the heads of the armed, naval, and air forces from accountability.
Amnesty noted that the amendment was rushed through parliament without meaningful consultation with civil society or opposition parties. According to the orga...
