Shillong, Sept. 17 -- In a major political development ahead of the 2028 Meghalaya Assembly elections, eight legislators from the United Democratic Party (UDP) are set to join the BJP after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah and receiving assurances on several key demands, party MLA Kyrmen Shylla said on Thursday.

Speaking to ANI over the phone, Shylla said that the eight UDP MLAs had met Shah in New Delhi and were assured that their demands, including the resumption of legal coal mining and inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, would be addressed.
