Jakarta, Aug. 17 -- Thousands of citizens selected to attend the Seconds to the Proclamation of Independence ceremony began gathering at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Sunday morning.

Many of them, including some who came from Cileungsi and Bekasi, West Java, wore their best attire-ranging from traditional outfits and kebaya with matching cloth, to formal suits paired with peci caps.

Yuli, 67, said she left her house at 5 a.m. This was her third time attending the ceremony at Merdeka Palace.

She expressed her enthusiasm not only for the festive atmosphere but also for the souvenirs given to participants.
