Makassar, April 3 -- Sulawesi has the highest number of endemic bird species in Indonesia, with 159 species recorded as of January 2026.
"The 2026 report by Burung Indonesia, which presents the latest developments in national bird diversity, shows that Sulawesi has the largest number of endemic species, totaling 159," said Burung Indonesia communications officer Meliza Laveda in a press statement received on Friday.
The report states that Indonesia is home to 1,834 bird species, of which 538 are endemic and found only in specific regions.
Maluku ranks second with 117 endemic species, followed by Java and Bali with 80 species each.
