Bogor, W Java, Oct. 28 -- A powerful undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck off the northwest coast of the Tanimbar Islands in eastern Indonesia on Tuesday evening, the country's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.

The quake occurred at 21:40 local time (WIB) at a depth of 185 km, about 183 km northwest of Tanimbar, according to BMKG data.

The agency confirmed that the tremor did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Indonesia lies on the seismically active Pacific "Ring of Fire," where frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
