Jakarta, July 30 -- The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged residents in coastal areas under tsunami advisory status to stay away from the shoreline ahead of the anticipated arrival of tsunami waves.

The warning was issued following a powerful 8.7-magnitude earthquake that struck off the eastern coast of Kamchatka, Russia, on Wednesday morning.

BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati confirmed in Jakarta on Wednesday that the agency had delivered specific instructions through local disaster management agencies (BPBD) as part of its early warning measures.

She emphasized that people should avoid coastal zones as the expected arrival time of potential tsunami waves approaches.
