Indonesia, Sept. 2 -- Acute respiratory infection cases in Indonesia's South Kalimantan Province began easing in the 33rd week after rising amid haze from forest and land fires, the provincial health office said.

Speaking here Wednesday, South Kalimantan Health Office Chief Diauddin said the decline was a positive development as authorities strengthen health protection and services for people affected by the haze.

"Cases previously averaged about 5,000, rising to around 7,000. But last week, in the 33rd week, they declined somewhat from the 32nd week," Diauddin said.

He said the latest decline could mark the start of a sustained improvement, but urged residents to continue taking health precautions.
