PLN sees 125-ton hydrogen surplus as clean transport opportunity
Jakarta, July 22 -- State electricity company PT PLN (Persero) said Indonesia currently has an annual surplus of 125 tons of unused hydrogen, presenting an untapped opportunity for the domestic clean transportation sector.
"We produce 200 tons, of which 75 tons are used. The remaining 125 tons are idle," PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said during the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit & Exhibition 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday (July 21).
Darmawan explained that hydrogen is generated across PLN's power plant facilities, where it is primarily used as a coolant for power generators. However, internal plant operations require only 75 tons annually, leaving a substantial excess supply.
